It’s July, and that means July/August Alumni Releases! With more than 58 SXSW Alumni Film & TV projects released since March, we hope you can catch many of them:
- Relive the trials and triumphs of youth in DÌDI (弟弟), Sean Wang’s feature debut after his short film, “Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó (Grandma & Grandma)”, premiered at SXSW 2023 and won the Grand Jury and Audience Awards plus an Oscar nomination. In theaters July 26.
- Be deeply moved by the power of theater and the incredible performances led by Oscar nominee Coleman Domingo in Greg Kwedar’s Sing Sing, in theaters on August 2 from A24.
- Get creeped out of your seat by watching Damian McCarthy’s Oddity, winner of the 2024 Midnighter Audience Award. IFC will release the terrifying film, featuring a wooden mannequin that will haunt your dreams, in theaters on July 19.
- Tilman Singer’s wildly entertaining creature feature Cuckoo finds Hunter Schafer trapped in an empty resort town hiding sinister secrets and unforgettable imagery. Watch Schafer and Dan Stevens play a one-of-a-kind game of cat-and-mouse when Neon releases Cuckoo on August 2.
- Don’t sleep on amazing 2023 projects finding their way out into the world this summer, including: Black Barbie, Chronicles of a Wandering Saint, National Anthem, and Is There Anybody Out There?
- XR aficionados can head over to Meta Quest for 2023 XR Experience Special Jury Award winner, Body of Mine, where you can inhabit the body of another gender.
