Periods extend beyond the realm of women, as trans men and non-binary individuals may possess a uterus and experience menstruation. In recognition of this, Vuokkoset is launching a tampon designed for men during International Transgender Awareness Week.
The introduction of this product addresses the gendered nature of hygiene products and the emotional challenges associated with menstruation in trans men. For trans men, menstrual pain goes beyond the physical; studies indicate that 93% of trans men have faced gender dysphoria related to menstruation. Dakota Robin, a human rights trainer, DEI consultant, and LGBTQ+ specialist, shares his experience, noting, “When I was young, menstruation felt not only strange but somehow wrong. Our culture does not really acknowledge the diversity of menstruating individuals.”
Society must evolve its perspectives to avoid perpetuating discrimination against gender minorities. The rigid categorization of periods can lead to identity issues and discrimination. Trans women may face criticism and discrimination for not experiencing periods, while trans men may encounter challenges if their periods start unexpectedly without appropriate products available in men’s facilities.
By challenging societal attitudes and embracing inclusivity, we can combat discrimination against gender minorities. Vuokkoset not only introduces a tampon for men but also plans to launch another product, emphasizing that menstrual hygiene is for everyone, regardless of gender or identity.
Understanding key terms is crucial in fostering a more inclusive dialogue. “Cis” refers to individuals whose gender identity aligns with their assigned gender at birth and cultural expectations. On the other hand, “trans” describes those whose gender does not align with their assigned gender at birth and cultural expectations.
Trans youth refers to young individuals whose gender identity may be non-binary, transgender, or involve cross-dressing. Cross-dressers express a gender different from their assigned gender at birth through clothing and behavior.
“Intersex” refers to individuals with ambiguous chromosomes, genitals, or hormone function, and it may also be a gender identity. “Non-binary” individuals may identify as both a man and a woman, something in between, or something entirely distinct.
Gender reassignment involves medical treatments to align a person’s body with their gender identity. An “agender” person has no gender identity, and while some consider it a distinct gender identity, others use the term to describe themselves.
Promoting understanding and acceptance of these terms contributes to creating a more inclusive and supportive society.
