The Wedding Rice – Turning a wasteful tradition into a viable solution

In Greece, 53.000 weddings take place annually, each accompanied by the traditional “throwing” of rice—an age-old custom symbolizing prosperity and fertility for the newlyweds. However, this practice results in hundreds of tons of edible rice being discarded, while local producers struggle to meet consumer demand. 

Wikifarmer, in collaboration with the First Agricultural Cooperative of Rice Producers of Chalastra, Greece, introduces a unique product: The Wedding Rice.  Available at an exclusive price through Wikifarmer’s website, this initiative repurposes non-commercial rice that is otherwise discarded due to strict market standards. By giving the once-discarded-rice  a second life, the longstanding tradition has transformed into a sustainable practice. 

The result? Farmers benefit, food waste is reduced, and a beloved tradition becomes viable – ensuring that every grain of rice ends up on a plate, not at the altar. 

Wikifarmer has been recognized as the “Wikipedia of the Agricultural Sector” by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for its efforts in educating farmers on modern agriculture and sustainable development. The platform empowers farmers by providing access to a global marketplace, enabling them to sell directly to businesses at higher margins, and offering education on modern farming techniques. A core part of Wikifarmer’s mission is also to reduce food waste globally by finding purposeful uses for overlooked, imperfect, or surplus agricultural products.  “We believe advertising should do more than just sell products. It should help make a difference. The Wedding Rice project shows how creative ideas can solve real problems by turning a tradition into something that supports both the planet and our local farmers,” said .”
