Los Angeles, California, February 21, 2025: Bold, magnetic, and unapologetically fierce, Jarina De Marco is back with her latest single and video, “Pelame La Papa,” a Dembow anthem brimming with irreverent vibes and a brilliant sense of humor directed by recent Caviar signing duo MAMA.
True to her Dominican heritage, Jarina’s latest release takes inspiration from 90’s merengue trends in the Dominican Republic, “Pelame la Papa” pays homage to the double entendre era of Dominican 90’s merengues like “El Baile del Perrito” or “Dame el Pollito.” Tongue-in-cheek humor is central, with a dembow backdrop and a relentless repetition of the phrase “Pelame la papa” that rolls off the tongue so deliciously.
At the core of this single is Jarina’s long-time collaborator, mediopicky, who co-produced the track with Alex Krispin in their LA studio. Jarina and mediopicky’s creative synergy forms a musical yin and yang, their contrasting tones complementing each other perfectly.
True to his innovative nature, mediopicky reimagines genre conventions. In this collaboration with Jarina, he takes dembow–a style often charged with sensual energy–and playfully subverts it. The result is an unexpectedly catchy track about the mundane act of peeling potatoes. Yet, despite its seemingly innocuous subject matter, the song delivers an irresistible beat that compels listeners to the dance floor with the same intensity as any conventional dembow hit.
MAMA–Mark Potoka and Matt Starr Spicer–is best known for out-of-pocket commercial writing and directing, shooting commercial campaigns chock-full of practical effects, unruly coffee machines spraying ungodly amounts of coffee, talking babies and dogs that are smart enough to write novels. The work lets the guys hone their voices and solidify their passion for bringing absurdist visuals to life.
