March, 2025.- In an exclusive interview, rising filmmaker Sophia Prestwich shares her excitement about joining Late Shift, her unique storytelling approach, and the creative journey that has shaped her career.
With a deep passion for authenticity and a strong commitment to intimate storytelling, Prestwich is ready to take on new challenges and push her creative boundaries.
A New Adventure with Late Shift
Prestwich is eager to explore new opportunities with Late Shift, a company that has placed its trust in her talents. “I’m excited to see what kind of opportunities come my way with them! And excited to learn from Matt & John too, they really have my back,” she says, expressing gratitude for the supportive environment she is stepping into.
The Art of Capturing Authenticity
Known for her raw and deeply personal storytelling, Prestwich emphasizes the importance of drawing from personal experiences. “I think the more you can draw from your own stories and feelings, the more that will translate on screen,” she explains. Her documentary background has equipped her with the ability to create genuine moments while directing, and she believes in fostering a safe space for talent to express their true selves. “Making sure your talent feels like they have a safe space to be themselves is important too.”
Motherhood’s Profound Influence on Creativity
As a filmmaker whose work is shaped by the female perspective, Prestwich acknowledges the transformative impact of motherhood on her storytelling. “How hasn’t it shaped my perspective! I know this sounds so cliché, but I see things so differently now as a mum,” she shares. Observing the world through her child’s eyes has deepened her creativity. “She’s interested in everything and everyone around her… she isn’t afraid to observe and see the details. It’s helped me so much to slow down and be a better observer, which in turn makes you a better storyteller. She’s the biggest blessing in my life.”
A Filmmaking Journey That Began at 13
Prestwich’s passion for filmmaking started at the young age of 13 when she experimented with a VHS camera. “Everyone has to start somewhere, and my early videos make me cringe, but it’s also fun to see elements of my style back then and how they have evolved into what I make now,” she recalls. Her early days of persuading friends and family to participate in her films have evolved into a professional career working with talented actors and collaborators.
Crafting Scripted Content with a Personal Touch
Late Shift has praised Prestwich’s ability to make scripted content feel natural and personal. When asked about her creative process, she explains, “I try to get to know my talent before we begin shooting and actually listen to their experiences beforehand. When the camera is rolling, I know what to draw from and create a situation where they feel they can be their authentic selves.” She particularly highlights the importance of trust when working with children. “If they don’t know you well enough or trust you, it can be so much harder for them to open up on camera, so building that friendship and trust beforehand is essential.”
Looking Ahead: The Future with Late Shift
With a bright future ahead, Prestwich is excited about the creative possibilities that await her at Late Shift. “I’m excited to push myself creatively… I really do love telling women’s stories, but I’m excited to explore other avenues too, such as more scripted narrative work.” The filmmaker sees endless possibilities and is ready to embark on new projects that will challenge and inspire her. “I think the possibilities feel endless right now of what we could create together, and that really excites me!”
As she steps into this new chapter, Sophia Prestwich remains dedicated to crafting meaningful stories that resonate with audiences. With Late Shift by her side, she is poised to make a lasting impact in the world of filmmaking.
