Silver Is the New Gold: dentsu Hong Kong Reveals the Untapped Spending Power of Hong Kong’s Affluent Silver Generation

As brands continue competing for the attention of Gen Z, a new report from dentsu Hong  Kong suggests one of Hong Kong’s most commercially attractive audiences may have been  hiding in plain sight. The latest report, Silver is the New Gold, finds that nearly two million  Hongkongers aged between 55 and 70 now represent one of the city’s largest and most  financially empowered consumer segments. With average investible assets of HK$6 million  and a growing population of affluent consumers with significant discretionary spending  power, the report suggests marketers may need to rethink long-held assumptions about  who drives growth in the years ahead.

While the marketing industry has spent the past decade focusing on younger generations,  dentsu Hong Kong’s research found that affluent silver consumers are increasingly defining  new behaviours and expectations across categories including wellness, travel, luxury,  experiences, lifestyle and civic participation. Rather than winding down, many are entering  a stage of life characterised by greater autonomy, financial independence and personal  freedom.

“Many brands are still marketing to an outdated idea of ageing,” said Yee Ching Wong,  Strategy Planning Director, dentsu Hong Kong. “Older consumers are often  overlooked or portrayed through stereotypes of dependency and decline, despite being  highly active, connected and engaged in culture, travel and new experiences. The  opportunity for marketers is to stop treating this audience as an afterthought and start  reflecting the reality of their lives.”

Today’s affluent silver generation is reshaping what later life looks like in Hong Kong. The  research identifies five major shifts in behaviour, ranging from a growing focus on personal  performance and self-improvement, to an appetite for new experiences, stronger social  engagement, greater willingness to indulge, and a desire to contribute meaningfully to  society. These shifts challenge conventional narratives around ageing and point towards a  generation seeking brands that recognise their aspirations rather than their age.

Rather than simply adapting existing campaigns or creating age-targeted products, brands  should reconsider how they engage with a generation that increasingly sees itself as active,  curious and continually evolving. Dentsu Hong Kong identifies three areas where brands  have the greatest opportunity to build relevance: enabling personal performance, curating  meaningful experiences, and amplifying identity and self-expression.

For an industry constantly searching for the next growth audience, the answer may not lie  with consumers who are just entering adulthood, but with a generation that has already  accumulated the assets, confidence and freedom to spend on its own terms. As Hong  Kong’s population continues to age, brands that move beyond outdated assumptions may  be best positioned to unlock one of the market’s most underappreciated growth  opportunities.
