Shiny landed in Shoreditch to host their staple Shiny Awards at Mother in London on September 16th, keeping to their promise of being a home and champion for exciting new & diverse director talents looking to break into the heart of commercial production.

Attendees from production and post companies, agencies, and brands gathered to a selection of great films that stay true to Shiny’s promise to showcase at least 70% of work by directors from underrepresented demographics.

Phoebe Syms, Brand Manager at KFC UK&I and Mother-MADE’s, Mother’s internal studio, Ops Director, Corrina Kapur, and Director and Editor, Myles McAuliffe selected the winners, and the event sponsors contributed additional prizes.

Winners

  1. “Pulp Gospel”
Directed by Jan Sederlöf, commissioned by Helsinki International Film Festival. This documentary was selected as a winner by Corrina Kapur, winning a meeting with her and worldwide representation with Global Production Network
  1. “Jl-AL – Vignettes”
A series of vignettes directed by Werner Vivier for Jl-AL. This piece was selected as a winner by Myles McAuliffe, earning a meeting with him, a meeting with Prettybird’s Emily Rudge & Fiona Bamford-Phillips, and a free Dolby Atmos remix and a day’s grade with Creative Outpost.
  1. “Corpus and the Wandering”
    1. Directed by Jo Roy for the National Film Board of Canada. Jo was selected as a winner by Phoebe Syms, winning a meeting with her and a meeting with Abroad Films’ founder, Attila Horvath.

Both guests and judges were blown away by the level of talent shown on the night. Phoebe Syms (Brand Manager, KFC UK&I), thrilled to be asked to judge, noted that the level of talent “made our jobs on the panel extremely tough as there were so many deserving winners!”

The Autumn Shiny Awards were made possible by the event sponsors, which were Mother, Prettybird, Creative Outpost, Abroad Films, Global Production Network, Loop Talent and 750mph.

For the sponsors, this is an opportunity for them to do their part for the next generation. Attila Horvath, Founder of Abroad Films, says his company is proud to sponsor Shiny as they “believe in championing fresh voices, bringing diversity to the forefront, and helping unlock the full creative potential of underrepresented directors.” Supporting Shiny aligns with their values by “investing in the future of storytelling, amplifying trust in diversity, and helping build a richer, more inclusive film and advertising landscape.”

For Julia Weichinger,  Owner & CEO of Global Production Network / Directors Without Borders, “directing isn’t just about brilliance, it’s about making people smile, think, and remember you long after the lights go down.” For GPN, supporting Shiny means supporting a place “where fresh talent gets the spotlight and new stories get their chance to shine”
