Satish Gogineni Creates History: First Indian to Ski Solo and Unsupported to the South Pole, in Antarctica

Hyderabad / San Francisco, 16th September 2025: Indian mountaineer and endurance athlete Satish Gogineni has etched his name in history by becoming the first Indian to ski solo and unsupported to the South Pole, completing one of the world’s most grueling human endurance challenges.

Starting at Hercules Inlet, Satish skied alone for 1,133 km across Antarctica, hauling a sled weighing more than 126 kg while ascending to the South Pole’s altitude of 2,300 meters. Over the course of 51 days, he endured whiteout conditions, relentless polar winds, and temperatures plunging below –40°C, skiing for up to 12 hours a day and burning more than 6,000 calories daily. His arrival at the South Pole in January 2025 marked a historic first for India.

Reflecting on his journey, Satish said: “There were days I could barely see a meter ahead of me, and nights when the silence felt overwhelming. But I kept reminding myself why I was here, for Spandana, and for the message that even in life’s harshest conditions, we can find the strength to keep moving forward.”

Adventure With a Purpose

The expedition was part of Project Spandana, Satish’s mental health awareness initiative dedicated to his late cousin, Spandana, who tragically lost her life to suicide. Through this project, Satish uses extreme adventure as a platform to advocate for mental health therapy and suicide prevention, highlighting that everyone deserves a chance to heal, recover, and thrive.

A Life Beyond Limits

Originally from Hyderabad and now based in San Francisco, Satish left a corporate career in financial risk management at Bank of America to pursue his passion for adventure. He is the founder of True North Expeditions, a venture that promotes athlete development, outdoor leadership, and inclusivity in adventure sports.

His record of achievements includes summiting five of the world’s 8,000m peaks, Everest, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri—while also becoming the fastest Indian to complete the Everest–Lhotse double summit in under 19 hours. Beyond the Himalayas, he is the second Indian to ski unsupported across Greenland’s ice sheet and has completed 14 full marathons, including four of the prestigious World Majors (New York, Chicago, Tokyo, Berlin).

What’s Next

Through True North Expeditions, Satish will be leading groups to Mt. Kilimanjaro in September 2025 and Mt. Aconcagua in January 2026. On a personal front, he is preparing to attempt the 10 tallest mountains in South America, followed by polar training expeditions,  a 21-day ski of the Northwest Passage in Canada or a 35-day South–North crossing of Spitsbergen in Svalbard in early 2026. These are part of his preparation for a world-first Antarctica expedition in November 2026.

For Satish, every expedition is about more than reaching a destination, it’s about using adventure to inspire resilience, inclusion, and hope.
