● As the year’s busiest travel period commences, Pitstop App makes every journey, and every stop, a moment that matters
● Activation saw Santa ‘crash’ into a motorway service station, offering drivers photo ops with reindeers, grotto visits and exclusive offers via the Pitstop App
UK, 4 December 2025: Christmas travel across the Midlands is expected to surge this year, creating one of the busiest festive periods on record. As millions of motorists prepare for heavy traffic and crowded stops, a surprise incident at Moto Rugby Services highlighted the value of better travel planning. Santa Claus was forced into an unexpected landing at the service station after a sudden “mid-flight mechanical issue,” leaving his sleigh grounded and his route in jeopardy.
Fortunately, the Pitstop motorway rewards app stepped in to help Santa refuel, recharge and prepare for the next leg of his journey. Families travelling through Rugby were amazed to see Rudolph and the rest of the reindeer resting on the forecourt while Santa explored the services, greeted children, posed for photos and handed out early gifts. The festive moment also served as a reminder that the region’s motorway services will play a crucial role as traffic builds in the run-up to Christmas Day.
Pitstop created the festive activity in partnership with i-media. It forms part of a wider campaign featuring video content, social posts, digital service station screens and in-app festive promotions designed to support drivers at a time when motorway travel becomes more stressful and unpredictable.

This year’s travel patterns underline the need for better planning support. Data provided by i-media shows that Friday 20 December 2024 was last year’s busiest Christmas travel day. Visitor numbers then continued rising until 23 December as many drivers waited until the start of the week before Christmas Eve to travel. A similar pattern is expected in 2025 because Christmas Day falls on a Thursday. Pitstop predicts Friday 19 December will be the busiest day on the roads and that services across the Midlands will see heavy footfall throughout 20 to 23 December.
With this in mind, the Pitstop App acted as Santa’s perfect co-pilot. By using the app, Santa was able to plan the rest of his UK route with real time journey information and amenity checks. He also unlocked festive deals, including a free Mars Bar, two for one Coca-Cola products and a redeemable Red Bull to keep himself and Rudolph energised. Santa redeemed rewards at brands he stopped at along the way, including Burger King, Costa, Greggs, KFC, Pret A Manger, M&S and WHSmith. He also checked key facilities at Moto Rugby, including showers, EV charging, a multifaith room, play areas and clean toilets before preparing for take-off.
Visitors to Moto Rugby Services enjoyed photo opportunities with Santa and access to festive treats through the Pitstop App. The app is the UK’s first nationwide motorway rewards platform offering personalised offers, partner discounts and simple stop planning during busy travel periods.
Phil Diamond, Pitstop Director commented: “We wanted to have a little festive fun this year – but the message behind it is real. Motorway journeys are getting busier, and more unpredictable, especially around Christmas and motorway service areas are a key way to lighten the load. Whether you’re Santa or a family heading home, Pitstop helps you plan, save money, and enjoy your stops along the way.”
Let us hope Santa’s sleigh is now fully repaired before the Christmas rush begins.
