Microsoft has announced an exciting collaboration with Inworld AI to bring artificial intelligence to Xbox. This multi-year partnership will enable developers to create AI-driven characters, stories, and missions on the popular gaming platform.
One of the highlights of this alliance is the “AI Design Copilot,” a system that will empower Xbox developers to create detailed scripts, dialogue trees, mission lines, and much more. Haiyan Zhang, General Manager of Game AI at Xbox, states, “At Xbox, we believe that with better tools, creators can make even more extraordinary games. This partnership brings together Inworld’s expertise in working with generative AI models for character development, Microsoft’s advanced cloud-based AI solutions, including Azure OpenAI Service, Microsoft Research’s technical insights into the future of gaming, and Team Xbox’s strengths in the revolution of accessible and responsible tools for all developers.”
The multi-platform AI toolkit will include the AI Design Copilot for scripting and dialogue, as well as an AI character engine that can be integrated into games and used to dynamically generate stories, missions, and dialogue.
Inworld has been working on AI NPCs that respond to player questions similarly to how ChatGPT or Bing Chat respond to natural language queries. These AI NPCs can respond in unique voices and can include complex dialogue trees or customized dynamic plots within a game. Inworld’s technology can also be used for storytelling, allowing top-down RPG companions to warn about approaching enemy groups or players on the way.
The implementation of generative AI in creative fields such as game design or voice acting is controversial. Microsoft offers this tool as an option for game developers, who will decide the level of generative AI in future titles.
Microsoft positions its tools as a support, similar to its Copilot system for Microsoft 365 and Windows. Zhang points out, “We want to help developers realize their visions, try new things, push the boundaries of today’s games, and experiment to enhance gameplay, player engagement, and more. We will collaborate and innovate with game creators within Xbox studios and third-party studios as we develop tools that meet their needs and inspire new possibilities for future games.”
As Microsoft advances in the world of video games, the integration of artificial intelligence promises to take creativity and innovation to new heights, offering players even more exciting and immersive experiences.
