Meta recently announced the expansion of Horizon Worlds, its metaverse ecosystem, from virtual reality headsets to mobile devices and web browsers. This move represents a significant shift as Horizon Worlds is no longer exclusive to VR headsets.
Currently, Horizon Worlds is in an early access phase for both mobile devices and computers. This means the platform will continue to evolve in terms of available features. Android users can currently enjoy the game “Super Rumble” on the Meta Quest app, with availability for iOS devices expected soon.
But that’s not all; Meta promises that this is just the tip of the iceberg, with more exciting worlds and experiences slated to arrive in the coming months. Users will be able to socialize with friends, laugh at comedy shows, and attend concerts and free events from any internet-connected device.
This initial step into mobile devices and the web could be a crucial moment for Meta’s ambitions in the metaverse world, especially in products like Horizon Worlds, designed for consumers, entertainment, interaction with other users, and brand integration.
Vishal Shah, Meta’s Vice President of the Metaverse, revealed that the company had a functional version of Horizon Worlds for mobile devices last year. However, they chose not to release it at that time to create a more native mobile experience rather than simply adapting the VR version.
To ensure safe access for all ages, the platform will feature the same safety features found in the Quest version, including protections specifically designed for teenagers. Additionally, various controls, such as muting and pausing, have been optimized for a smoother experience on mobile devices and computers. The platform will remain free and available to individuals aged 13 and older in supported regions.
Early access will gradually expand to more users as Meta gathers feedback and enhances the experience. The company plans to share more details about Horizon Worlds and its metaverse efforts during its scheduled Connect conference on September 27th and 28th.
Meta is making Horizon Worlds available to everyone by opening its doors to mobile devices and web browsers. This expansion could change how we experience the metaverse and connect with it. The future looks exciting!
