KitKat isn’t taking any chances. Not anymore

After news broke that over 12 tons of KitKats had been stolen, the brand quickly became the focus of national headlines. But rather than simply respond, KitKat Canada saw an opportunity to own the conversation: transforming a fleeting news moment into a fully realized brand narrative: a city-wide, highly visible “security escalation,” timed to our most critical restocking moment: Easter long weekend. 

Instead of treating the theft as a crisis, Courage reframed it as the inciting incident of a larger story, rooted in drama, humour, and cultural relevance.

“Rather than relying on heavy messaging, we tapped into a distinctly Canadian sensibility, an inside joke audiences could immediately understand and participate in. No explanation needed: just a KitKat delivery truck, fully escorted as if it were high-value cargo.” – Joel Holtby, Founder and Co-CCO, Courage.

The result was a campaign that didn’t just ride the wave of earned media, but actively shaped it. From social chatter to real-world sightings in downtown Toronto, consumers became part of the narrative—questioning, sharing, and extending it far beyond initial headlines.
