Blending live action, CGI, and narration by Marianne Faithfull, directing duo Karni & Saul’s Wild Summon delivers a haunting and visually striking portrait of a female salmon’s fight for survival.
Positioned somewhere between a nature documentary and a sci-fi film, the mesmerising 14-minute short imagines the salmon in human form, following her perilous journey through an increasingly hostile world. Set against the dramatic landscapes of Iceland, the film seamlessly fuses live-action cinematography with CGI animation to portray an environment shaped by predators, pollution, and the growing impact of climate change.
While the character’s uncanny, otherworldly appearance may initially unsettle, her human form ultimately creates a powerful emotional connection, drawing viewers into the relentless struggle and fragility of life beneath the surface.
Wild Summon was written, directed, shot, and CGI-animated by Karni & Saul through Sulkybunny, with additional support from their 14-year-old son, Yuli Freed, who served as primary drone operator and aerial cinematographer during the production.
