Cannes Lions 2025 hosted a rare, introspective session with acclaimed musician James Blake and industry leader Suzanne Powers, exploring the intersection of creativity, collaboration, and human emotion in an age dominated by speed and technology.

A Human Approach to Creative Performance

Blake opened the session with two deeply personal performances: Séance (from the “Sinners” soundtrack) and Trying Times (from his upcoming album). Both songs delivered raw vulnerability, setting the tone for a conversation that challenged the audience to reconnect with the emotional core of creative work.

Mastery Before Innovation. Blake emphasized the importance of foundations and deep learning before embracing tools like AI or music software. Contrary to the “overnight talent” myth, he trained for 14 years before even touching a laptop. He cautioned against the “TikTokification” of creativity, where speed trumps substance, warning that this shortcut culture risks diminishing true craft.

On Collaboration and Letting Go

Blake offered a refreshingly honest take on creative collaboration:

“Sometimes I wasn’t the right vibe for the room—and that’s okay.”
He discussed the awkwardness and growth that come with working across genres and personalities, highlighting a key moment with Rick Rubin, who taught him the power of stepping back and making space for others’ ideas—a concept strikingly parallel to agency dynamics.

Building a Collaborative Circle. Having recently left his label and management, Blake now leads a non-hierarchical team where creative and operational decisions are shared.

“Instead of being a solo artist with a manager, I became part of a partnership. I’ve gone from artist to middle manager in a way—but it’s liberating.”

Human Creativity vs. AI. In the closing moments, Blake issued a warning to brands and companies embracing AI:

“AI was supposed to give us more time, but it’s just giving us less.”
He stressed that human creativity still holds the emotional resonance machines cannot replicate—and that companies will soon have to choose between scalable output and genuine connection.
