Ocean Bottle Launches “Acqua Sordida” Water Bottle Infused with Plastic Pieces to Highlight Impact of Single-Use Bottles
Today, Ocean Bottle introduced “Acqua Sordida,” a premium water bottle brand aimed at urging the UK to sever its harmful ties with plastic bottles. Imbued with microplastic “bits” symbolizing pollution from our waterways, Acqua Sordida serves as a stark reminder of the detrimental effects of single-use plastic bottles on both the environment and human health.
This unveiling follows recent research commissioned by Ocean Bottle, revealing that adults are projected to consume over 200 billion single-use plastic water bottles in their lifetimes. The study, conducted among 2,000 individuals, found that 27% of British adults regularly use plastic bottles, with an average consumer purchasing five bottles per month.
While many are aware of the health risks associated with consuming water from plastic bottles (22%), a concerning 47% of respondents admit to giving little thought to the potential harm it poses to their well-being, especially when opting for on-the-go convenience.
Furthermore, our detrimental relationship with plastic bottles extends beyond health concerns. Despite 88% of adults acknowledging that plastic pollution ends up in the ocean and eventually re-enters the food and drink chain, the average person vastly underestimates the amount of microplastic particles present in bottled water.
Contrary to popular belief, recent research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) journal indicates that individuals ingest approximately 240,000 microscopic plastic particles per liter of bottled water—up to 100 times more than previously estimated.
The launch of Acqua Sordida seeks to shed light on this critical issue, emphasizing that our dependence on plastic water bottles has reached toxic levels. Ocean Bottle urges the British public to take action by pledging their commitment to reducing plastic bottle usage via its website this Valentine’s Day. Surveys reveal that 61% of respondents are actively striving to decrease their reliance on plastic bottles, highlighting a widespread belief that major brands are not doing enough to combat plastic pollution.
CEO and co-founder of Ocean Bottle, Will Pearson, underscores the urgency of reevaluating our relationship with plastic bottles. He asserts that consuming plastic particles with every sip of bottled water is unsustainable and harmful to both marine ecosystems and human health.
The release of Acqua Sordida coincides with Ocean Bottle’s milestone achievement of preventing one billion bottles from entering the ocean to date. For every reusable bottle sold, Ocean Bottle collects 1000 plastic bottles from regions heavily affected by plastic pollution.
The campaign urges individuals to show appreciation for the planet by permanently severing ties with plastic water bottles this Valentine’s Day and committing to sustainable alternatives. Participants who take the pledge stand a chance to win a limited edition Fire red reusable Ocean Bottle.
