March, 2026.- At SXSW 2026, the AI audio pioneer ElevenLabs unveiled its “1 Million Voices” initiative, a global program designed to offer free AI voice restoration to one million people who have permanently lost their ability to speak. This humanitarian effort aims to empower individuals with medical conditions by returning their unique vocal identity, showcasing a transformative shift in the practical applications of generative artificial intelligence.
The project was inspired by the company’s work with the late actor Eric Dane, famous for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, following his diagnosis with ALS. Before his passing in February, ElevenLabs collaborated with Dane to clone and restore his voice, allowing him to communicate with his family using his own recognizable tone. His widow, Rebecca Gayheart Dane, is now championing the initiative to ensure this technology reaches those who need it most.
Speaking at a SXSW panel, Rebecca Gayheart Dane described how losing his voice “extinguished much of Eric’s joy and sense of identity.” She shared that upon hearing his restored voice, Eric was moved to tears knowing his daughters would always be able to hear his true voice, highlighting how vital vocal identity is for maintaining human connection and emotional legacy during end-of-life care or chronic illness.

Amidst the ongoing global controversy regarding deepfakes and AI ethics, Gayheart Dane pointed to this project as “the ultimate example of using AI for good,” proving that technology can be profoundly humanitarian. The initiative serves as a powerful counter-narrative to digital misinformation, focusing instead on restoring human dignity through advanced speech synthesis and accessibility tools.
The restoration process is designed for ease of use, as ElevenLabs’ AI tools can faithfully recreate a person’s voice using just a voicemail or a short video clip. This breakthrough allows individuals to type messages that are then converted into speech in their original voice in real-time. This level of vocal fidelity enables more natural communication, helping patients feel more like themselves during daily interactions.
To maximize the reach of the program, ElevenLabs has formed partnerships with leading accessibility nonprofits, such as the Scott-Morgan Foundation. These alliances are crucial for identifying individuals with ALS and other speech-limiting disabilities, ensuring that the “1 Million Voices” initiative targets the most vulnerable populations and provides them with high-end technology that was previously inaccessible.
The company also premiered the documentary “11 Voices” at SXSW, featuring eleven individuals currently using the technology. Participant Yvonne Johnson, a British woman living with ALS, moved the audience by using her restored North London accent to speak during the panel. Johnson noted that the tool allows her to speak her mind through text-to-speech, humorously adding that it even lets her “give someone a piece of her mind” in her own voice, reinforcing the vital role that personal expression plays in the quality of life.
