Nine have announced that Cosima Marriner has been appointed managing editor of The Australian Financial Review.

With an editing and reporting career spanning 20 years, she joins The Australian Financial Review from The Sydney Morning Herald, where she has been working as deputy editor and a former acting editor. Prior to her role with the Herald, Marriner has worked as former editor of The Sun-Herald, as well as in roles at The Telegraph and The Guardian in London.

Marriner will take up this role following the resignation of Joanne Gray, who has been working as AFR’s managing editor for the past four years. Gray recently announced that she would depart the masthead to join climate advisory and asset management firm Pollination.

As managing editor of the Financial Review, Marriner will be responsible for managing the masthead’s budget, driving the performance of the newsroom, and leading AFR’s subscriber-based growth and business development strategy.

An internal statement sent by AFR editor in chief Michael Stutchbury and editor Paul Bailey reads: “The Financial Review is fortunate to attract a journalist of Cosima’s experience and expertise.

“We look forward to her bringing her experience in helping to lead the metro subscriber growth strategy at The Sydney Morning and The Age to drive the next stage of our newsroom and subscriber growth.”

Upon Marriner’s departure, editor of the Sydney Morning Herald, Bevan Shields, said: “I have loved working with Cosi and will miss her a lot. She is a terrific journalist and gun editor. She understands the media landscape and our audience. She has exceptional news instincts and judgement. She is a fierce defender of the Herald and its staff. And she is also great fun, which counts for so much.

“Cosi will excel in her new role and the AFR is lucky to have her.”
