As the year 2024 arrives, thousands of people worldwide are looking to book entire accommodations to celebrate the beginning of the new year. Airbnb, the leading platform for lodging, has strengthened its measures to prevent unauthorized parties by employing artificial intelligence (AI).
The platform, renowned for its offerings in nearly 200 countries, has implemented an advanced AI and machine learning system. This system will detect and block reservations identified as high-risk across various nations, including Spain, the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, and New Zealand.
The technology for preventing unauthorized parties evaluates numerous indicators, such as the trip’s duration, the guest’s proximity to the accommodation, and the type of space reserved. Naba Banerjee, Director of Trust and Safety at Airbnb, assured that this tool is designed to protect hosts, guests, and local neighborhoods.
“We’re confident that these measures will have a positive impact by using AI in a way that benefits both hosts and guests,” commented Banerjee.
These restrictions will mainly focus on reservations lasting one to three nights in entire accommodations for New Year’s Eve celebrations. Users making reservations will need to confirm their understanding of the prohibition of unauthorized parties. Those who violate this rule could face suspension or expulsion from the platform.
In the past, Airbnb’s policies prevented thousands of accommodation bookings intended for unauthorized events worldwide. In Spain alone, approximately 8,050 guests were blocked or redirected when attempting to book for the year-end period.
To complement the AI, Airbnb offers various tools, including global reservation controls, free noise sensors in collaboration with Minut, a neighborhood assistance line to report urgent issues, and a 24-hour protection line to directly contact the platform’s security team.
Hosts also receive guidance to prevent unauthorized parties, reinforcing the platform’s global ban on such events. Since its introduction in 2020, these measures have reduced incidents related to unauthorized parties in Spain by 92%.
With the assistance of AI, Airbnb aims to make these restrictions more effective and continue promoting a safe and responsible environment for all its users.
