Award winning director Richard Linklater and Mothers Against Greg Abbott (MAGA) launch campaign to encourage Texans to vote Greg Abbott out of office.

TEXAS – Award winning director and Texan, Richard Linklater (“Boyhood”), has teamed up with grassroots organizationMothers Against Greg Abbott PAC (MAGA) to launch the “Abbott Out Advent Calendar”, a campaign containing a series of films to raise awareness and engage voters in the build-up to Election Day.

The project is modeled after an advent calendar that begins on October 8th—a month from Election Day— and reveals a reason to vote against Greg Abbott each day in the form of striking, monochromatic testimonial portraits directed by Linklater.

“Mothers Against Greg Abbott is excited to be working with Richard Linklater, his team, and the thirty Texans who were brave enough to speak out on why we need change in Texas,” said Nancy Thompson, Founder of Mothers Against Greg Abbott. “Texans from across the state believe it’s time for Abbott to go. It’s time for change in Texas—it’s time for Beto O’Rourke.”

The films end with handmade signs from each Texan asking voters to vote out Greg Abbott and the famous handmade “Mothers Against Greg Abbott” poster that helped turn Thompson’s one-person protest into an army of over a quarter-million supporters.

Linklater’s unique history of using time as a storytelling device in his work, notably Boyhood and the Before trilogy, comes through as he packages Abbott’s countless failures to build anticipation of voting in change for Texas, so it’s no surprise that he came on board to help Mothers Against Greg Abbott countdown the days.

“It’s no secret that frustration with Greg Abbott is growing. And it’s not just Democrats who are fed up. Texans from all walks of life are realizing that this state is being mismanaged and that our very lives and liberties are on the line due to policies put in place and crises ignored, such as women’s health, power grid deficiency, and gun violence,” said Linklater.

“As a lifelong Texan myself, I feel the same outrage over the incessant failures of Abbott’s administration. I certainly have something to say about it. And so do our friends and neighbors throughout the state. So let’s give them a voice. Let’s hear what real Texans really have to say about Greg Abbott.”

While they’re set to release one per day, like any advent calendar, they can all be opened in a single visit. The website will also provide voters the ability to mark their own calendar, and commit to schedule a time when they will vote Abbott out.
